For media studies I have chosen to do a magazine front
covers and contents pages. My target audience is aimed at males in particular
as there are already many magazines in the media industry that are designated
for females and dedicated to them. The main genre of the magazines will be
fashion as it is very popular in the media industry and there are many ranges
of them that you can compare them too. In both of my magazines I will use a
range of ethnicities and people from cultural backgrounds to avoid any discrimination
complaints.
In the first magazine the genre and target audience is
mostly males. Due to the genre being fashion for both sexes and also
multi-cultural shows I didn't have many limits for my magazine design. In the
first magazine I am using a male, to represent an ideal model for male
audiences to be inspired from and to imitate and a very fashionable clothing to
present fashion as a whole. The first magazine background will have a male in a
jumper and with a very masculine stance, the jeans and jumper represent
everyday clothing which is very relatable for the audiences, this therefore
connotes an everyday look and a brilliant inspiration for my target audience. In
the background of my first magazine, there is snow and mountains which makes
the magazine look very prestigious, this could connote that wearing clothing
like this and looking like the model shown on the front cover could potentially
give you those feelings either as though you are in a place like that or that
it makes you look as adventurous and as dangerous/ risk-taking as the model.
The use of typography that I will use will be rather formal but also straight
to the point so it can appeal to a range of audiences. I will also use colours
ranging from dark to light blue to match and suit the other colours used in the
magazine and to also make the colours used on the model to stand out. The use
of light colours like white and blue shows that the certain season is winter
and therefore the other colours and the intertextuality in the magazine must
contribute to this.
However, on my other magazine I will use the same kind of
clothing but different colours and areas. I will use more of an orange coloured
jumper to connote autumn/ spring and also another male model so it will appeal
to male audiences. I will also use another male in my second magazine as the
audience is aimed at men, I am aware that it is possible to use a female on the
front cover which could be appealing to men however, those terms and the certain photography doesn’t appeal to me, I
therefore chose to use a male model instead. I will aim to use a male model from
a different ethnic background so that I can avoid any discrimination for the
magazine and to make it multi-cultural.
